Tips and Hints gathered from the members of the AirgunBBS.

Squeeze, don't pull or jerk the trigger.
Never swing your gun away after taking a shot. Wait until the pellet hits its target before moving it.
Check for parallax error by holding the rifle as still as possible and moving your head up and down, see if the crosshairs move on the target.
Shoot with your lungs empty, relax your chest and let the breath come out naturally as if pushed out by the weight of your chest. Do a dry run before the shot, close your eyes when exhaling ready to fire, when you open your eyes if the cross hairs are not on the target move your position slightly and try again.
Test at least half a dozen different quality pellets to see which work best in your particular gun and, having found out, stick with them.
Keep checking your pellets of choice. You may find that the quality drops off over a period. When it does, time for some more batch testing.
Practise your shooting in as many positions as possible, from prone to standing and everything in between.
When a rifle shoots a pellet / bullet, it doesn't go in a straight line, but arcs, starting below your scope's crosshairs it will rise above the intersecting lines then fall back to below the intersecting lines in the distance.
Part of the art of shooting is to know what path the arc follows and apply that knowledge to your shots. Failure to apply that knowledge may, for example, lead to the pellet / bullet going over the head of your quarry / target. As part of this whole business, it is important to be able to gauge the distance to your target.
Wind direction also needs to be taken into account. Pellets are light little scribbins and are easily moved from the path of righteousness by that devilish wind!
Practice as often as you can, at varying ranges, conditions etc.
Don't forget follow through.
To check on the wind down range when shooting knockdown targets, lift the string off the ground and watch the bow. Sometimes its different at the target.
The wind doesn't just blow your pellet off to the left or right it will also raise or lower the shot by a small amount depending on the distance and wind strength: -

Wind From Left To Right - shots go Right
Wind From Right To Left - shots go Left
Wind From Behind . shots go High
Wind From the Front . shots go Low.
When shooting at a knockdown target, if you knock it down, reset it and check to see were your pellet went. (pointless if it's shot up).
